Eve Beckons, Again
I mull over the thoughts and memories from my first time in Eve, and I can’t help but think I failed, Eve failed. I really wanted Eve to capture my imagination, it doesn’t help that I still read mmog blogs discussing the harrowing complexities Eve offers, or the thrilling tales of woe and adventures unfolding in the never ending wars and skirmishes inhabiting Eve that are so intriguing, tomes are being written and stories spoken. Eve is a story teller’s dream compared to most other virtual worlds, but you have to put in a lot of effort before you’re written in the history books, becoming a traitorous scoundrel helps. I didn’t make it past the two week trial, but I stuck through until the last few days where I languished and my trial period expired.
Herein lies the problem: I’m jaded, with a few pinches of bitterness still bottled inside. I lost a lot of passion I once had for massive games - my desire to play waned. A former uber hardcore gamer to an extreme casual gamer, soft to the core. I find it hard to log into a mmog, unless I’m motivated to play with someone I already know and consider a good friend. My good buddy compares mmogs to football. It’s the same game with different players and uniforms in a new stadium. It’s sort of true; I can only take so much. I start a character, I kill monsters, I save the princess, I get levels and in return I’m rewarded with carrots and other people do it too and you can all get together and have bash and farm carrots together. Super!
Exploring a world is alright the first time through, but even the best dungeons become old and before I know it, I’m clawing my eyeballs out, devising plans on how to destroy the install discs, hatching some vendetta. It doesn’t help that everything that isn’t a player is so fucking static and every npc is living out their own groundhog day. It’s been two years and nothing has changed since I completed those 10,000 quests but my levels and gear? Alright, bring on the expansion! Next.
Almost all of the stories in mmogs suck, there are only so many plots, but the mechanics have really destroyed what has become questing in modern day mmogs. Over 200 books on my books-to-read list, most of them filled with stories that are better than any “Epic” or “Elite” quest you will find in a mmog. (hell, most players don’t even read the quest or give a fuck about lore, but lore players such a big role in the setting and theme) And I won’t get started on combat mechanics, let’s just say, you are pretty much stuck to one of three roles as any class: dealing damage, preventing damage, sustaining damage. Yea, fireballs and backstabs can be fun, but give combat some depth, at least Eve has that.
Maybe, I will last for a full 30 days this time….
Oh, what convinced me to give Eve another shot? My good buddy, he passed his two week trial with flying colors. So, let’s see if this lasts us longer than EverQuest II did. For anyone wanting to upgrade from a trial account without having to pay the full twenty dollars, purchase a time card (average price is 15), save yourself a few clams.

No matter how you feel about RMT, go ahead and buy a couple extra time cards and sell them for ISK. It will help you skip “the suck” and have fun instead. You’ll eventually wonder where the game part is anyway (I only lasted a couple months), but having a few extra ISK makes it less risky and more enjoyable. You would have spent the same amount of cash spending 2 months mining rocks to be able to afford decent ships as if you just buy the damn credits in the first place.
After a couple of months it will start to take more and more time to setup, and you spend less and less time pew pewing. By then you’ll be ready to boom boom in the caribbean as a pirate instead.
It has crossed my mind, 180 million isk is frequently bandied as the norm - nice chunk of change and very tempting considering… 8 long inactive months, I log on and open my wallet, expecting some type of bond (hah-hah, right!) to kick in with a fair return investment to get me on my way, I was met with the cold harsh reality, I only had 70k to my name. Luckily, my friend was kind enough to send me five million, it won’t last very long, but I was thankful that I could actually buy some skill books.
What ship did you fit out before calling it?
Thanks for stopping by and commenting, nice to see you branching away from Amber Night’s cruel clutch.
I never like to predict where my interests will lie in the future, but for the moment, I’m just enjoying the Eve experience. I enjoyed Warcraft for more than two years, but yeah, it got boring. I still enjoy lotro, but only for a relaxing break now and then, not regularly. What I like about eve so far is that I can decide for myself what I want to do and what sort of empire I want to build. Since I’m not a ‘typical’ gamer, whatever that is, and games are rarely tailored to my style of play, that’s pretty compelling!
But, but… The crystal balls and palm readings, all for naught! Solo, alone, in space, with the rocks - is that your style of play? Space traveling for readers, most excellent.
Thanks for your second comment, since I forgot to thank you for the first one.
I thought I first came here from Lum’s place, but I don’t remember (The only thing I go to Amber’s sight for anymore is the links in her blogroll).
I played EvE for about 2 months and change. After selling a time card the first thing I did was buy and fit a Vexor (I liked the idea of drones). Messed around with that for a while, then headed for the battleship skill. So in less than 3 months I had a Domi flying around, ratting in low sec. Certainly not kitted to the hilt, nor did I have the skills for much tech 2 except the drones. I’m happy I to have skipped months of mining to be able to afford having fun in a battleship. Another plus is that you aren’t so worried about getting blown up, when you can replace anything you have, pretty easy.
Shit, it’s Thursday already. I better write something relevant. I remember a bughunter from Amber’s site, I assume that is you. It has been awhile - I’m a terrible stalker.
I’m not keen on mining either, but I need the space golds. I was wondering if ratting is a viable way to make 100 million or so isk in a few weeks?
