"He wrote and implemented the Coldain Ring quests, which concluded with a large scripted war in which players helped the dwarves in their effort to fight off an invading army of giants. "

10th Ring War was perhaps the coolest event / raid in the history of EQ.

Why didn't you like Velious when compared to Kunark? Sebilis doesn't count. ;)

I thoroughly enjoyed the Velious expansion, but it was mainly a raiding expansion and I was in love with raiding, it opened up so more doors and paths for players who raided. It was definitely a tailored expansion and although there was non-raiding content, there wasn't nearly enough which didn't involve massive time sinks

The expansions he worked on weren't that great if you ask me. Kunark was excellent but it went down hill after that.

Hey Steve,

What a shocker and I’m pleasantly surprised you took the time to respond. Please be sure to give your friend my gratitude for tipping you off and I also, thank you for replying.

Its good too know you are doing fine, having a blasty blast and spending quality time with your family. Admittedly, I was concerned not only for Sigil and Vanguard once learning of your departure, but also for your welfare. This last half year has been a somewhat rough time for Sigil and you just never know what might happen in this crazy thing we call life.

One of the main reasons for my remaining grasp on Vanguard's potential was primarily the anticipation for extraordinary content with you leading the helm of the quest team and in my opinion I whole heartedly believe you did some excellent content implementations with the tools available during your tenure at SOE.

I was hoping for fantastical and challenging encounters and given that you were working with the shiny customized Unreal Engine the potential must have been momentous compared to what tools you have worked with in the past. Perhaps some remnants from your showmanship will be retained in the world of Telon after Vanguard hits our desktops. I can only hope, although, I'm not sure if I will ever experience Vanguard's raid content as I’m sure it will require an exuberant amount of time dependency.

I definitely look forward to see what future game endeavors you are devising. Thanks again.

Wow,

Thanks for the kind words, Krones.

A good friend forwarded this thread to me, and since you've gone to all that trouble I felt obliged to respond.

I left Sigil early in December and have spent the holidays and last couple of months hanging out and doing cool stuff with my wife and kids. It's been very refreshing to reconnect with them and I'm having a blast.

While I'm proud of the work I was allowed to do on Vanguard, and hope the team ships a great game, I'm now focusing my energies on finding a new team to work with on another exciting project.

With any luck, the best is yet to come..

All the best,

Steve 'Akkirus' Burke

I followed Everquest closely for several years, in and out of game. I was also a volunteer rep which opened a few channels. I read up on the dev biographies I could find. I try and make the effort to discover which developers are responsible for what area of the game. I want to know who is responsible. It was also easy following their history compared to other companies since their team was smaller in those day.

As you already know, following what developer is working on what specific system/area in a mmog like WoW is more difficult. Blizzard tends to be more private with this information and I no longer have any channels with them. I just know the typical, Kalgan lead developer on the player versus player systems. Tigole on high end raid content, Furor first on quests and moving his way up to battlegrounds, but who knows what he is working on now. I wish companies would disclose this information.

I'm no J. though, this bastard is a devphiliac, a flipping genius when it comes to stalking developers and knowing their history.

Ah, you stalk so much better than me.

By the way, how you got to know the work of each dev on EQ? That's something you did in another occasion as well. I remember.
