Everquest 2: The Dog Days of Duping
Some shifty cockass, albeit a cockass with a hefty padded bank account brags about finding a duping glitch in Everquest 2 and exploiting it for the win. That shifty cockass, being Methical waxes about his amazing and infamous shenanigans in humorous detail.
I was going to crack some jokes on how I duped the dupers thread in revenge, and it’s only fair I dupe the thread because they are the most retarded loved dupers I have come across when suddenly the thread was killed from being overloaded.
I thought this quote was amusing from the person who posted Methical’s story. Keep in mind, this is not the duper, which is what my dumb ass originally assumed.
“One last thing, I never learned how to play the game. I maybe got some mule to level 5 or something and I could get citizenship in a heartbeat but I was just in it for the phat irl loots. Too bad meth and kea had to lose actual characters.”
Haha, how jacked up is that? A newbie who only played a mule to level 5 found and abused this exploit. You would think someone who actually played the game to, I don’t know, level 10. haha. on me.
This guy is small potatoes, (sorry, but true!) he is nothing compared to Yantis who control millions of dollars in his bank accounts or even other dupers I knew in games like Diablo 2 who duped for a longer period squandering more money under their disposal, but the story is great and funny enough that I went through the effort to resize and make adjustments to the pictures hijacking the thread to post for your vieweing pleasure.
I hope Methical & company enjoy their fifteen minutes. I know I would.
I’d laugh so hard up until the point where I cried if SOE took legal action against Methical. Even if it was too set an example, but I seriously doubt SOE will. As for how much cash he made? I’m assuming at least 100k, and no more than 200k. (Methical stated he at least banked in 70k). He also said in the severed thread he claimed he made a little over a years worth of wages, and more like three years worth of wages for most people.
The dupers may have used game cards to pay the subscription costs for all accounts, but with this information and with what SOE has on record they should be able to go back and track IPS and ban the rest of his accounts. Doubtful considering the exploit has been fixed, all the back tracking would take too long for them to even give a shit. Hell, Smed probably bought some plat off him.
Cont. Reading for the full duped story on Everquest 2: Dogs Duping Days.
Updated addendums:
Methical dropped me a line and advised me my original assumption about the actual level of his character was wrong and not a measlely low level newb, but actually a level 30 power house, which was a decent level for that time.
This duping occurred back in later December and January, just in case for those wondering. Don’t want anyone thinking all this turgid inflation happened last week.
In the original thread that was posted in the last few days the duper claimed he still has 8 or 9 accounts that weren’t banned. I don’t have any proof, but I don’t see a reason why not to believe him, you make the call.
According to Scott Hartsman the accounts were banned and dirty funny money from the glitch was cleaned up soon after the exploit was discovered and fixed. Methical says that is not the case and he has multiple accounts still in his control and that another blackmarket operator was abusing this duping glitch on every server.

You forgot to copy the hooter’s girl picture. What a failure!
How could you!? I duped that sob, but for my personal collection.
I thought about it, mhmm hooters girl, but meh, his ugly mug trainwrecks the whole photo. haha. The original thread is back up, if you feel like taking another gander and duping one for yourself.
Can’t blame them. I’m sorry, but if all that cash just flooded into my bank account, I don’t think I could have stopped until they put the kabash on it. Why would you? Thats alot of money, not to mention its perfectly legal.
its awsome they made a killing good for them.
I’m not sure if SOE could take action in court based on the premise of copyright infringement or not. Probably could.
From a legal standpoint selling items via the black market is more of a grey area, but I seriously doubt any mmo company will be seeking litigation against IGE or any garage operators.
Brad McQuaid, the vision, (signal trumpets) has stated in the past that Sigil has something in store and forming an alliance with other mmo companies that could possibly be a huge blow to IGE, but I wouldn’t hold my breath because Brad talks a lot… I’ll believe it when I see it.
thanks for reposting this they took it down b/c it overloaded the severed site.
That was an amazing read. Truly the stuff of legends. Reminds me of something else Chris Rock said, for every great fortune, there is a great crime. But in this case its not really a crime. Just an act of deviance. I bow down to the author and the many movie references made in this riveting tale.
I didn’t expect the story to be linked all over, it’s churned up a fairly nice chunk in bandwith even with the images reduced in size, but it’s not a problem and thank you for originally sharing it with the public.
Indeed, awesome Rock reference, btw.
Check your email Krones, slackass.
Yeah ok so I was one of those nasty dupers, what good times. Thanks for re posting the story, Severed couldnt handle all the readers. Good day gentlemen
haha, if you notorious dupers really want a crowd, you should post on foh if you haven’t already. This blog is small potatoes.
Oh yea, I want some fuckin’ dogs, damn you both.
Sad just sad to say the least and shows what the world is becoming, for me ill be dead in a few years and am glad of that. Stuff like this makes me sick.
I must say I am impressed with the way that went down. I can’t help but root for the guy who sees an opportunity and then has the gusto to take full advantage of it. Big ups and madd props, I just wish it were me who thought of it first.

I’ll give you a biscuit if you cut me in next time!
I love you.
Nice
I currently play EQ2. My First MMO as a matter of fact. Bought the game a month ago for my Fiancee, we having a blast. Today the game goes down due to plat duping, then i find this read. Very interesting read and well written. But i see past that for the person you really are inside. An insidious human being who would stab someone in the back for a buck any day. You got your paris, and me and the fiancee got this exploited and now ruined game and many hours and lots of money wasted. I appreciate what you did for me, and for the entire EQ2 community to line your pockets with more cash. I appreciate that people consider you great for this underhanded accomplishment, and hope to never see the likes of you again. I hope that when you find a game you enjoy that someone comes around to ruin it for you, for good. I hope they take a love you have for something, and ruin it for an eternity. Atleast then you will understand what you have done and perhaps not do it again.
Your right, they probably wont, but should prosecute you. But you are small time after all arent you?
damn great work with that. my duping career only lasted about a week, but thats cause the station exchange servers were only up for about a week. and i didnt make half what you did. but sure wish i did.
Very lame……
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!
You sold on the german servers too?
I hate SOE for ruining a game I wanted to love.
I hate secondary market with a passion…I was so torn reading this…laugh..fume…laugh….ARGH!!
I love the way the friends name is changed in the story but not in the screenshots….unless Freejimmy is a mule…ah well it doesn’t matter now.
Thing about exploiters and dupers and people who generally underhanded, they tend to make mistakes and leave a trail like caterpillar.
I just got my two accounts banned for duping… although not using any bugs that I’ve seen brought to light. My bug allows the duping of not only items but money also. They say the dupe bug was fixed but i was duping fine after the downtime. I believe they found my accounts because the enourmous amounts of plats and rares on it.
Bvye Cloneitup, im glad you found the bug and hope others like you find it too so EQ2 can weed out the underhanded insidious users in one fell swoop.
My account was banned on Saturday 8/6/05
It was banned for having 200p on it….it was just a lvl 6 toon.
They told me I was using a 3rd party program to earn lots of coin.
Actualy all I was doing was playing real life on EQ2.
buy low and sell high….but I only did this on one server.
I did nothing wrong at all….I use to do it on eq1 and made about $28k a year doing it.
In fact 200p isnt much at all compaired to my room mate who hax the shit out of this game….I told him to do that crap on a different server that he would fuck my market up…so he did.
He now still has an UNBANNED account and last time i looked he was at 800p.
His total monthly cost for this is about $90
*** NOTE…you cant have more than 150p on low lvl toons***
If SOE ever gives my account back then i’ll let you all know…but if they dont.
I can asure you I will put half my call centers computers to work nights for me as I set them all up to bot tradeskills and harvest….

reminds me of oceans 11 MMO stylie!
I play EQ2 and as far as I can see its cheating against other players, what they should have done is reported it as a bug. And yes I reckon SOE should ban them and probably take legal action to deter other players from doing the same thing. The reason I say this is because they knew it was the wrong thing and they chose to take advantage of it.
Just clarifying. It sounds as if you possibly have the facts confused.
Krones, I, me baby me, = reporter.
Methical = Duper, Author of Story.
Comments Above = Krones, I, me baby me
Story/Duper = Methical
He sounds mad.
Anyway, I am not involved with the recent string of duping, so don’t get your panties in a bunch. If you didn’t feel like your game was ruined in January, then I certainly didn’t ruin it now. That stuff is old, in EQ2’s short life, it’s ancient.
What I hear is, many people tried the old dupe that I used, and stumbled across new dupes trying to replicate what I pointed out. Kind of funny. Just makes me wish I still played.
Wow, I think thats hilarious, as a player of EQ1 and user of MQ2 and all of that stuff, I’m on the darkside and the dream is always to find a dupe. The best I’ve ever done is a macro that makes 5k an hour and another after that got nerfed that made 1k an hour. The 5k an hour one netted me about 500 bucks but I can see you were damn lucky and made 10k’s maybe even 100k’s
Hey guys. Be sure to pay the taxes on the real life money you made. Sony won’t bother to come after, but the IRS will. And they are some mean MF’ers. So see your accountant and gratz on the exploit.
haha-haha, sweet! Think i’ll have to start playing this game now.
Ok well … i don’t know if your ever did that on my server but the problem with having loads of money is that SOE knows people buy it and if i buy like 500PP (which i have) and i get banned where is SOE then .. i am thinking SOE is SOL … cause they support and in some cases (new IRL exchange) support it … who are they thinking they are?
At the same time who are your thinking your are? your fucking it up for everyone some people earn theire money some people buy it but either way at least they r trying to do something in game except fuck it up for others .. everyone got messed u0p from this .. and these damned servers have been down forveer because of it
gratz on the successful dupe.
I’ve worked hard to get my level, my horse, and my plat, but if I ever found an exploit such as this, who knows what I would do…
hahaha.
should have done the same thing. you kept all the money ?
Crayla Color - Mythical - Server: Guk
What a funny ass read. Oh my God. Who could blame you though for having duped?
Too too funny
Who cares about the dupe - that was a great piece of writing, and I loved reading it.
Bank your plat money and get to work in journalism or something.
Well done, as boring as the game was back then. This must have been the absolute max fun you could get out of it. And getting paid for your fun too, well thats just pure genious.
It was an awesome read, you rule.
Can’t fault it. I suppose it’s Sony’s fault really… if they had noticed the exploit earlier then it might not have happened. Very good read too.
Nice, man, really nice. Congrats.
Typo: The phrase is ‘in vain’ not ‘in vein’
http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=in+vain
Although I suppose this is more of an eggcorn than a typo.
I would have done the same thing. duped as hell
hehe. gg guys =)
that has to be the most fun thing I’ve ever read.
don’t we all love ebay?
Wow…I just spent fucking 30 minutes reading about eggcorns before I ate a candy bar and snapped out of my coma.
Buy yourself a kitten and some Zoloft, my friend. Don’t kill me just ’cause you think it will impress Jodie Foster.
And also, yes on the German servers. As soon as a new server came out, it was like a bonus in profit because we’d have 10pp going before anyone else had 10 gold, literally.
Btw, as a funny side note after reading Krones’ story about wishing to find a dupe, etc. We almost became the people who duped a rediculous amount of baby dragons.
The ultimate plan was to dupe a retarded amount of baby dragons on every server and fill large guild halls with them, then give everyone access and make posts about visiting the baby dragon houses, where we would hand them out for free. We actually had about 20 or 30 baby dragons duped before we decided that this plan made no sense.
And well, money is cool. I like money.
hahahaa genious! this just got posted on a norwegian IT news paper. I think 90% of all the people reading this though “Daaamn why wasnt that me finding that bug?!” lol i know i did! way to go buddy! hope you and ur girlfriend had a lovely time in paris!
btw, screw the morality on this one..ITS JUST A PC GAME!
Methical, you’re a real legend
What you did was ingenious and brilliant (and profit earning, which is never a bad thing). I mean yeah if you have a conscience it was wrong, but if people want to have game money that bad, they can buy it off you, and if you want to expose a bug in a game and make money from it, the best of luck to you.
It’s just such a shame to see such a beautiful plan burn to pieces.
But thats just how I feel…
WELL DONE METH!
brother from another mother, ya did good. How was paris?
love to hear from ya, chat old days(for me) on fennin/eq1.
sue knos how to reach me, i’m in taiwan rl.
/salute from stylish stabber
ventper dis’Grace, gardener
Greenbacks are extremely nice to have, and something I would like over being the duper formerly known as bagman.
I was failing to be funny, the dragon whelp plan definitely makes no sense, but hot damn, spot on to what I was talking about with the bags. I love the idea, at least you initially thought of doing something that off-beat before pulling in all those money hats.
The read was very entertaining. My initial reaction is one of disgust that people would do that to a game that many people work hard at and derive much pleasure and satisfaction from. But when I think about it a little, it IS just a game. And I have to applaud your entrepreneurial spirit!
Unfortunately, I was banned in the recent case. I did not participate in any duping. I’m not sure if it is because they didn’t like the fact that I purchased 20 plat through the Incredible Gold Exchange or if it was because they noticed that I mentioned the fact that I mentioned that there was a dupe scheme to some of my guildies. After the fact I read the rules and found that you can be banned not only for taking part in, but also for communicating a bug in game or in any public forum. Mind you, I did not say what the dupe was, just that there was one and that’s why we had the excessive downtime, along with the fact that some friends of ours had suddenly and mysteriously disappeared.
It is unfortunate that SOE has taken to such harsh measures in order to quell these things rather than simply doing the work to fix them. I really enjoyed the game and will miss it very much. This experience may turn me off to SOE for good. When I inquired as to why I was banned through customer service chat, they just replied that I should send an e-mail to blahblah@blah.com. I have yet to hear anything back from them. Considering the amount of time and money I have invested in the game, I feel quite ripped off. Especially since I have ‘technically’ done nothing wrong. When I think about further, it might be interesting to try to figure out how many innocent people have been banned and if there is support for a class action case against them?!
Man that was an amazing stroy. Me and my friends found out at the begining about the tradeskill bug and took advantage too that. My frineds and I made about 20 plat off of it. We are living great lives and have 2 horses each. Pretty badf though that they fixed the problem. Man it was fun. We were making 54 sp everytime we spent maybe 30 sp on the broker. We had the time of our lives and man I know what it felt like to be full of money.
Great story as i said before and i hope we find more bugs to make money off of.
I feel EXACTLY the same way Ronny. I was banned for the recent plat dupe
Hackers Slam EQ2 Economy
and read that, notice how they say stuff like “illegal” and “hackers”,
what a hacker i am for walking in my inn room to receive another payment for the items i sold…. not my fault SOE made a mistake like that
WRU pictures?
Love the news.com story. Gotta love how clueless they are about the difference between finding a game exploit, and hacking a game. An exploit is just a random loophole in the system that pretty much gets discovered by a bored tool like myself.
Hacking on the other hand, takes talent. Just ask Angelina Jolie (she’s hanging out at the swimming pool on the roof).
Very interesting story… I’m suprised you lasted that long even. Good work, I guess
Oh and I loved the “cover up” name, Mr. Pink. haha, good movie.
Yeah to all you people who say blah blah you what what you deserved, and all that. Things are different when a dupe like the one I experienced was so easy to do, so easy, anyone who walked into their inn room would have it forced upon them. I admit it was real fun making all that palt and then buying anything I wanted on the broker. But I do regret it and I really did enjoy playing the game.
This is fucking great! Fuck Sony and EQ2! Good going hope it happens more!!!
haha great read and great idea, always interesting to see the little guy win a little
“I hope that when you find a game you enjoy that someone comes around to ruin it for you, for good. I hope they take a love you have for something, and ruin it for an eternity.”
Yea I did and that happened. The game was EQ1 and the ruiner was SOE. I prolly did it, money part aside, to get back at SOE for destroying my guild (Severed) and taking loot away from me. Also the shitty customer service didn’t help any. Pre-SOE EQ was the snap dizzle yo.
btw I’m mr. pink in the story and meth posted it under my login on the severed site originally. The quote at the beginning about not knowing how to play eq2 is mine.
i Admire all the work that you have done
-A fellow EQ’er looking for all the sploits i can-
Good work , whilst i don’t believe in people exploiting a bug , my hat’s off to the spirit of free trade that allowed you to make so much money so soon
bear in mind that it’s the people who BUY the plat , that makes all of this so possible
OH , and does anyone think this is less fair than ‘Team Manaburn’ used to do in EQ 1 , totally legally just ethically wrong ?
Well, I have to say that the read was excellent. The story was linked on my guild’s website, and having a couple minutes I decided to read it. I laughed pretty hard on some of the euphamisms.
I took part in making money off of tradeskills. Not thinking there was anything unethical about it because hell, I was taking the time myself to a) gather b) click the silly icon to create something and then sell it to the vendor. A friend and I made about 20p each, bought horses, bought everything we wanted. We knew the fix was soon to come, so we did what we could for how long we could and still enjoy the game today. I can’t say I’m not envious of the way you made your dough. I can’t say I wish I hadn’t discovered this myself. I remember seeing the dogs on the market… which was rumored at the time to be a dupe, but I didn’t know how to complete it. I was on Unrest and yes, the effects of this one dupe are still felt. Such is life…
Morally wrong? It’s a game… and if you’re so intent on anything that you lose perspecitve of the core facts you’re bound for disapointment.
you know methical i just want to say to you that you went out like a boss, you found a duping glitch and you exploited it, but not only did you keep it for your self, you drove down everything else with it, and your smart you made some serious cash off of it,
kind of like New Jack City or Scarface if you ever saw any of those movies, I tell you this because I too was involved in a duplication glitch in a game called Runescape. I was only playing a game a month after it started to happen and when i overheard a conversation on how to do it, I too went to the darkside
I just want to applaud your efforts because not only did you use the glitch for others and the good of the game, but you are a terrorist, the kind of virtual terrorist that people look up to, especially me I dont care what anyone says about the game you didnt ruin anything you just made it so that greedy others couldnt, i mean you knew you had to cover up your tracks but you also knew the ins and outs you were very smart, in my opinion you went out like a straight up “g” you did the damn thing I just wish you would have been succesful you would have been the Nino Brown and Mr.Pink would have been the G money.
I applaud all of your efforts and I am glad this happened to you guys. You guys are cool in my book
Legal action should be taken against you. What you did was blatantly wrong. Even though people payed real money for digital material (which is the dumbest thing someone could do in my book), you still made people believe what you were selling is legit, which in legal terms is false advertising. Not to mention you screwed with a lot of people’s lives (not much diff from Enron and Tyco). I’m not even an EQ2 player and just stumbled on this story, but it’s people like you trying to ruin the fuckin’ world. I mean, you get away with something like this now, what’s to stop you from doing it IRL?
Even if SOE doesn’t take action against you, you would be wise to cut your shit out now, while you’re ahead. ‘Cause if I met some fucker like you in real life, I’d take your fuckin’ head and put it on a stake in my front yard as an example (and that’s no joke, I’m dead fucking serious). Watch out for an angel of wrath, you knew this was coming. It’s been haunting your dreams. You have been warned.
-Michael
First off, ive never played this game…nor do i want to. I stumbled across the article, read it, and felt compelled to tell all the little girls who are crying “the game isnt enjoyable anymore” to eat a fat one.
I love the wimpy comments too, like, “An insidious human being who would stab someone in the back for a buck any day.” Wow…….harsh! But let me break it down for a quick second and show these pansies why they are hypocrites, while I simultaneously prove myself to be a badass.
Surely people who accuse Methical of being such a selfish cold hearted bastard would never do anything like that. They would NEVER stab someone in the back for a quick buck….
really? hmm…
Well if thats the case, im sure you pussies all have no problem deleting all those mp3s off your hard drive, cause last i checked, all that music belonged to the artists. And downloading mp3s…well…i believe thats…how did we phrase it? oh yah.. “stabbing someone in the back for a buck any day.” Right.
I mean…do you really even have to weigh out options here? lets contrast and compare.
-Pay $15 for a CD and drive to get it OR get it in 15 seconds for free? hmm tough one.
-Play shitty game for 3 years and make a little money OR play shitty game for 3 weeks and make BANK? yeah, another stumper.
So how about you all find your balls, and commend Methical on his excellence rather then trying to act like saints.
Phenocide9000
100 bucks says that Michael and his spooky “angel of wrath” both have mp3s on their computers.
0_0 man that was a crazy read. Heh, I don’t play MMORPG’s probably cause I hate the monthly fees.
Yes and by replying I give Methical more attention. Not to insult anyone, but I still have no idea why the heck someone would trade in real money for virtual money. That’s the only reason why Methical was so successful.
It is surprising if you don’t play mmos, but playing is like any other hobby with tangible assets, and ultimately time is money.
LMAO, wow…scary shit you have there buddy, but on the real, most of you wankers anyways are all talk some, as what we sometime call in EQ1, “window warrior” talks and babbles about some shit they dont even know.
first off. i commend and applaude the article. it was a good read and was a nice change from time to time. never have i seen such a creativeness by a person, both is outsmarting the game itself and publication of such journalism talent. very nice.
second. people who talks shit (i.e. micheal “angel of wrath”) that it is not Methical’s complete fault, youre just jealous as the fact remains that he made money, and you didnt. that he didnt buy his plat/gold off the net, and you did. but admit it, if you wouldve found the dupe yourself, would you really stop what youre doing and report this “bug” or brandish your lightsaber and embrace the darkside.
for all of you who dont know, MMO games now a days are getting harder, stupid expansions being added left and right, stupid new rules being added, and when someone found a loophole in this scenario it is only human nature, sometime, to actually take advantage of it, becuase the MMO youre playing is taking advantage of you too, and dont tell me i’m wrong on this one.
so for you Methical, may you rise up on the shadows of the dark side of the force and hold your head up high as you embrace the darkest power of all, and for that i salute you…oh dark one
Jenerabab
I think the fact that “duping” items in real life would stop them from doing it “IRL!”….
Congrats to you Methical!
Sony made people attune most of their items making them unsellabe and you took their economy for a whirl. There is balance in the universe.
What is funnier than someone exploiting a glitch that the developers overlooked is that there are people out there paying real money for digital money. Those people obviously had more money than they needed. Kudos to you for relieving them of it. That’s why I play EQ2 to relieve stress, not my checkbook.
On the subject of obtaining in-game money at the cost of real money:
MMO’s are fun and tend to take an immense amount of time. A friend of mine, who plays FFXI, figured out that at his hourly wage as a checker it would ‘cost’ less, timewise, to buy the gold than to farm it. So he considered buying a bunch of gold off of an exchange, and then, due to that and some other considerations, quit FFXI.
A lot of people just don’t want to leave, and so find there time and money better spent questing than farming.
This is just too funny. Anyone who is so addicted to the game as to by digital items from a non-authorized vendor deserves whatever they get.
Caveat Emptor (Let the buyer beware)
What’s funny is the disbelief that there are people out there wanting to pay for in game money. You would not believe how fast stuff sells out there. The market is not just a handful of closet nerds, pawning their Sega Genesis’s to get enough scratch for some PP, it’s A TON OF PEOPLE. We would talk with some of them. Some were buying PP as gifts for their wives, some were like goddamn 50 years old and just wanted to buy better gear, some were kids who asked for PP on their birthdays. You would not believe who buys and who doesn’t. Hell, back when kunark was first released, I bought a regen BP. I felt like shit afterwards, but I was young then, and was innocent.
To the supporters, thanks. I hope you stumble across something like this. Just remember, the trick to finding a dupe is convincing the computer that you’re getting rid of something and keeping it at the same time. Via lag, button clicks, deaths, etc. There’s always a way.
There is no fucking spoon.
To the haters, see above. You’d stop being such assholes if you just made some money too.
dude, you are the shit, i am not worthy, u rock . im realy stoned
Ok So…this is the real Mr Pink aka Keailae if anyone remembers me. This is my first public comment…contrary to popular belief I believe in tipping and Im a lady IRL. I would like to thank all of our supporters. To those who gave me their cash-I leave it on waitress’ tables all accross America now. Funny how the world works?
What is FOH? I might post there. I LOVED reading your article. It’s so great to hear another story. I love talking to the people that are working the secondary market. It’s amazing how many of them are college students like myself. Most are very approachable and very nice people. BTW, visit gameslah.com/pics - That’s a master at work. I think it’s sad that most of the insiders isolate themselves. We all love talking to each other, we’re just afraid of losing our edge so we can be a little secretive about exactly what we are doing and how we do it.
I’m amazed to hear that the dupe you found was ingame! That makes it rolling on the floor laughable. And hoards of people didn’t figure that out? I guess that’s one of the reasons it’s good to be on the front lines when a game comes out or has an expansion. When Depths of Darkhollow came out for EQ 1, one of the mosnter missions was giving double experience. I banked about 50 AA in a single gaming session. That was a FLAGRANT oops by SOE, I’m sure the alpha / beta testers even told them about it. But there it was, open for all the people that were on the front lines.
You’re right about some smallfries being a$$holes to deal with when trying to sell them plat. Most have been really decent though, and I’ve never been offered less than what IGE offers. Although EQ 1 prices have taken a hit since about this time last year. God, I remember asking one of my teachers if I could cut class one day and he asked me why. “Well, I just checked prices and if I sell plat right now, I’ll make an extra $100.” - He let me go with a smile and a few words of envy. When he learned how much I was making, he actually pulled me aside after a class and said, “Hey, we got like 20 computers here that are only used a few hours out of the day…”
Yes, I’m a computer geek. Computer Repair. Everquest gave me my Associate’s Degree and if I have my way, It’ll give me a Bacchelors too. I got my AA, but EQ pays me so much that it’d be foolish to get a job just yet.
It IS an amzing feeling to be ontop of the world. At my pinnacle, I had 13 computers in my bedroom running 24×7 and damn, that gets hot! Even in the dead of winter, I kept my window open. Thanks to WinEQ, I have far fewer computers now.
Everquest put me through college, made me my own boss, and is still paying me very well. I grew up dirt poor. Barely meeting the poverty line. You know where you almost quality for the free school lunch, but not quite? I think the lunch lady understood. After a while, I was getting seconds and thirds (which wasn’t allowed.)
Now, I’m known at the guy that drops a little money and brings booze to the party. I’m the guy that drinks wine instead of beer. And if you’re a girl, I can afford to take you on a nice date. Ingame, I equip the most expensive gear. But of course, that gear is for profit too. I’m starting up a powerleveling team and when it’s GTG, I’m going to give one of my friends a stay at home job where she can watch her baby child, and be her own boss. I spend, but I also save. I drive an old car and don’t go into town except once a month so that I can save on gas. I wear clothes with holes in them and well, let’s just say a nice lunchlady could know where my roots are. I don’t have to live like that, but I chose to so that I can throw as much as possible into my business. I want to be the guy that founds the next IGE. But it’s all one step at a time involving patience, sacrifice, and all the virtues that lead to success. Right now, i’m still a smallfry, but I double my plat about a month and this month, I have 20 million.
Do I dupe? Nope. I work the market on multiple servers. I’m not the guy you hate that has all the overpriced stuff.. not HIM. but THEM! Sometimes I’m the top 3 guys you hate. But what can I say? I just sell stuff at the price where somebody will buy it. It only takes one person and the item is sold. So if ya really want to hate anybody, hate that customer that keeps buying the best gear. (Yes, that customer bought it from me and is giving it back to me. But it’s not like they wouldn’t give that plat to you if you could undercut me =P )
People post here saying, “Nay, Nay!” And saying the workers of the secondary market have negative qualities, but they are mistaken. You don’t make money without having virtues. The guy with no moral that you gotta look out for, the guy that WILL stab you in the back, he’s working a dead end job. The surprising and overwhelming majority of business leaders and self made bosses are pristine examples of citizens that the rest of us should try to emulate.
My first year with Everquest, I mastered the bazaar with such ferocity that I turned an investment of $500 into about 14 thousand and I’m still going strong. I had to pay college expenses and stuff, bought a car… but imagine how much more it’d be if I hadn’t been taking money out every month?
That’s why next year, I’ll probably move to India or Mexico. I’ll take one of my friends on the ride of their life and they’ll profit right along beside me… and a hoard of kids. (Yes, I’m starting a farm, and I’ll pay wages that will make the local people smile because they have an oppertunity to change their lives and the lifestyles of their families. Son will come home and say, “Tonight we eat out.” because he just might make more than his parents.) I’m going to profit, AND do a bit of good in this world. I might contribute to inflation in a game, but it’s not like I’ll be messing up the economy of a country. And this is inevitable people, as inevitable as the Wallmart that we all hate, but can’t resist shopping at. This is real life, this is business, and this is globalization. It’s uncomfortable that the rules of real life and gamelife have to overlap in this way.. .where you eventualy have to drop real money if you want that item…. oh wait, no you don’t. You can farm it yourself, and even sell it, then make that profit virtual… or real. (See, the power is still in your hands, all ya gotta do now is hate the RL rich kid that doesn’t have to work ingame.) And remember, if the game looses it’s appeal, you can sell your account!
This is why we laugh.
As far as all the people that I tried to get as investors that laughed since I was making money with a game, I guess I’ll have to send them a postcard. For the members of my own family that laughed at me, I’ll forgive you by paying off your motgage in a few years and then you’ll laugh even harder because you know I did it by delivering stuff that isn’t even TANGIBLE.
By the way, I’m looking for investors right now. If you give me a thousand, I’ll have it doubled within 6 months. But don’t you dare go acting like the ba$tard small biz guys that run auctions and use words like “We” and “company” when it’s just them living at home with mom. None of that pennypinching, basement bargain finding bullshit, just deal straight with me and keep it simple. My site will go live in a few weeks and it will look like shit at first, but it will be functional and that’s the only contact information I’ll share.
Sinfulbastard.com
I’m starting a new project that goes live in about 2 weeks and I’ll be making about $360 per day because I can’t make more until I buy more computers.
You can expect to see pictures of my operation on the site. I like to show people my gaming system, (Mine is pure shit compared to gameslah, but I still like to show it) I like to talk about what I use, and just be friendly with everybody on the secondary market. I’m not as much of a recluse as the others.
Hey, Methical or Kronos, I’m actually writing a computer ethics paper at Ga Tech on virtual property and Real Money Trading (focusing mainly on FFXI since it’s the game I play) but your story *really* intrigues me, and I’d like to use it as a source for my paper. Also, if you’re up for it, I might even like to interview you - although I imagine the article is enough. What do you think?
- Shadida
Krones can give you my email. If he still reads this.
Sure, what is your email address Shadida? Post it here or you can send me a note at krones@plaguelands.com and I will send you Meth’s contact info.
Great story, to lazy to read all them replies. The thing I want form an MMO is to be extroadinarily famous, or to be able to say “I’m the best of the best.. you all suck!” and it be 100% true and proveable. Awesome story. My EQOA account (well main one I started on in march 03, month after release) is really quite close to ban, and I just love that account. My first MMO. Anyways.. I need to find myself a nice glitch. Loved this story.
Condamor/Mexico Marr’s fist.
lol.. I’ve done this in UO, EQ, EQ2, WOW, and Shadow Bane….. dupes PWN. My bro quit his job so he could manage our ebay sales full time. Talk about a cash grab. Problem is, these developers are getting too smart on this stuff. Back in the UO days we could use a dupe for 12 months and nobody would figure it out. Shadow Bane was a disaster. We were making big big money on ebay then everyone discovered the dupe and we went from making $200 USD per transaction to $19 USD per transaction. Ahhh regardless it was a good time.
However with the smarter developers catching things quicker these days and better logging… it’s become easier to go back to selling pot.
Course I spent a bunch of my paypal account gains from these dupe sales on picking up chicks on the internet. The perfect nerdy ending to a nerdy earning.
now that i think about it.. i do remember in the early days of eq2 wondering what is with all the rich low levels. I assumed Dupe… i’m glad it’s true!..
Good times. Good work.
And no it’s not illegal, they cannot charge you with copywright blah blah problems. However my ebay account is still banned and i have many many boxers of each of these games sitting in my spare room, most of which have banned accounts.
you are my hero.
F#ck SOE Good stuff .. proud of ya.. oh yea and Fuck sony
LOL you guys are legends, you screwed EQ2’s economy(its still screwed) while they were trying to find a way of getting a cut in online vending themselves (station exchange).
I reckon atleast 10pc easily of there customers have quit (thats just the ones who like the chance to make a few dollars on the side)
Interesting,
So a shop floor furniture salesman on about $40,000/year finds a bug in a
code and spends hours and days exploiting it to make just enough cash to
blow it all on a holiday to Paris with his Girlfriend and Family. Paris
LOVES Americans with more money than sense.
So he probably made about $60-80K then blew it all “giving it large” trying
to impress his girlfriend and family with money.
I expect she and her family pissed off once the money dried up and he is
just boasting about his exploits to try and get some sort of emotional
payback from thread posters to make him feel better that he blew it.
Rule Number 1 of scams: Never brag about them, just take the money quietly,
walk away, and look for the next one.
This guy is a looser.
Actually Gwolf, I payed off all my student loans. Finished by BA. Payed off credit cards I had been using during college and took my family/gf to Paris. Paris wasn’t expensive at all really, considering it was run by my University. Still had enough money to lend to my sister, and live off for …umm I guess almost a year now? With no job. It’s been a great vacation.
The only thing you know about scams is what I just told you. Shut your mouth and stop the beeping on the friars atm at your job. It’s time to take them babies out of the grease bath.
As far as emotional payback? I thought quite frankly I would just get alot of hate. I just thought it was an interesting story. Thanks for reading it man, I just owned some of your life.
Love you,
Meth
Ps. Learn to spell “Loser”, if you need help, I’ll tatoo it on your fucking forehead.
Looks like I was pretty close to the mark.
Bye forever.
Good job guys! Duping for the win, any game anytime, being as low, cheap, and dirty as you can be, screw newbs over! w00t!
Haha, fucking great read. I mean seriously, loved the “blow” referrences lol. It isn’t a duper you should be, its a fucking writer. My side seriously hurts, “WE RESCUED THE MAIDEN FROM THE BALDUVIAN ORC MASTER FOR THE WIN” ROFLMFAO. I seriously hope you keep sploiting and continue to write. A+
good read, wouldnt try it though, and no i dont have any MP3’s on my PC.
well done on taking advantage of the game bug, SOE desktop support teams should have worked harder to bring back the economy back into shape on the servers faster. and yes we can still see the effects. all i can say is, should employ better developers in future and hope you enjoyed your funny money, the read was funny.
Methical, you really are a loser. YOU are the one who needs to learn how to spell… tattoo has 2 o’s, bend over and I’ll TATTOO it on your ass so you can look at it everytime you toss your own salad.
Yomama, you are a dumbass. He mispelled tattoo by leaving out a “t” not an “o”. So much hate. I know middle school sucks and all, but really…
Methical - You are a GOD. That was a fun read and I only played EQ for about a week before I got tired of killing rats and getting stuck zoning. Thanks for sharing!
Lol nice story Meth, packet flow editing and all you should try it sometime
Awsome read! Most entertaining EQ or MMO related story I’ve ever read.
To all you pissy little people, it’s a game, get over it.
To Meth, HELL YEAH!
To Krones, great work, I agree, you should be a writer.
This story was inspiring, entertaining, and evil; everything I could want.
I don’t know if you wrote that for some type of self-redeeming purposes or what the reason was, but after reading the entire story, I’m not mad at you.
I’d rather see you go to Paris then Smedley anyway. For making us pay for a game that should have died in beta and continues to be in perpetual beta. That’s just some stupidity on SoE’s part not to have the code in place to catch it, and they still don’t because it’s still going on.
I especially loved the part where you recapped the forum frenzy. What’s ironic is that 99% of those finger-pointers are probably posting from their jobs with the excel worksheet queued for emergencies while displaying public outrage over the dishonesty within. Dumbasses. I’m so glad to be away from half those retards and that’s all Sony has left on the subscription list. Be thankful you got banned when you did.
So how was Paris? lol
Your My Hero!
I know I am, I’m so much more and even further fantastic than other heroes my cock shoots laser beams and leaves a shiny gold coin for the taking.
I just want to say that I am a single partent, I am disabled and can do nothing but sit, so I play eq2 to have something to do. I get only 300 bucks a month so my son and I have no fun, no extra just what we have to have to live day to day. Had I been smart enough to figure something like that out I would have done it too. I could have lived off what they made for many years. They didnt do anything but sell something “imaginary” for real life money, isnt that what soe is doing? They are getting rich selling us all this “imaginary” stuff that these guys resold and made a piece of the soe pie.
Great Job Meth! I hate SOE. I was recently banned (a few days ago), as well as my wife’s account and daughter’s account because I received ‘dirty money’.
Screw SOE. One of my old, rich ex-guildmates used to play EQ2 and then quit when they screwed with the classes again early this year. Point is, I asked him how to get more cash in EQ2, and he tells me to login and make new character and piss around in Qeynos for a bit…
I get contacted for a trade, boom, 75 plat, didn’t give them anything. Hell, I can’t complain right? I asked my friend how much I could get, and he just gets more sent to me! I get greedy, and he says he can get me even more… for a price— it is like a drug dealer now, and I’m the evercrack plat addict. He gets plat sent to me, and he wants me to auction some of it off legit on the station exchange!!! I keep some profits, I send him some. I asked where he was getting it from, and said he had some powerful friends. I thought he meant like.. level 60+ friends. This kept up for a month. I’d get 75 plat, keep 15, auction 60 in 2 30 blocks on the SX…
BAM, end of month, *all* my accounts (2) (station access pass with all full games), my wife’s account, and my daughter’s account all banned! I contact support, they treat me like shit and tell me I am a plat farming cheater or I am buying it from a “third party website”. I was like WTF? I am selling it on *your* website SOE.
I talk to my friend… he is pretty pissed off too, and tells me what he meant by powerful friends… friends that are managers of certain 3 letter 3rd party websites in foreign countries.
Well, great. I’m banned, screwed out of my accounts, but I made 4k, nothing close like you did, but eh… I am actually pissed off at SOE for this. Wouldn’t they want the plat to get brought back to legit sites? Hell, I didn’t even know it wasn’t legit.
SOE refuses to ever lift the ban on the accounts, it really sucks for my wife who had nothing to do with it, nor ever received a coin (she plays on non-station exchange servers).
All in all, great job making cash. I’m not sure what to think about good/bad. I just say we live in a capitalist world and you capitalized on the situation. Hell, you lived up to expectations. Not to mention the many rumors that SOE actually takes a cut from these secondary markets… why the hell do they care if that is the truth. They should be glad.
Huge respect, Meth - Extremely well played.
Eh, I’m torn over this one… You didn’t really do anything wrong, though you might have broken the EULA by some people’s standards….. but you didn’t really do anything that any of these other guys wouldn’t have. Just think in RL terms…. all you guys that are saying he should be prosecuted… if you found a hundred bucks on the ground, would you HONESTLY try to find who it belonged to? Or would you do like most of us and put it in your pocket and go on your way?
Well, at least this story has been written down, so hopefully SOE and other companies will think about. It could have been bader if nobody would know what happend. But a lot of ppl read this so far and the real jackass is SOE.
As a customer I would think about playing games from companies who are not willing to take some serious and fast action against ppl who are screwing up their games. Why should I play a broken game - furthermore why should I actually pay for it?
I dont care much about ppl who’re exploiting it although I dont like their false attitude. They’re antisocial and that’s all. Laws were invented IRL to stop (the most of) them - I guess its a matter of time (since the success of WoW and the growing MMO market in general) till the first exploiter finds himself in the court room IRL. Im not a big friend of laws in general - but unfortunately they’re needed.
On the other side a lot of ppl are taking this games way to serious. I played EQ2 for 2 or 3 months this year and while it lasted I had fun reaching my goals by my own. If the moment comes when I ask myself if I should really pay real cash for virtual goods I know that Ive lost the real reason to play the game.
bye
Shrug, he made the plat - people bought it. He may have provided the goods but the people who brought down the economy were the ones buying it.
WOW… good read. I’ve only changed over to EQII in the last 6 months (I think) but I do remember the Vendor changeover (right after the Tradeskill changes that made it an exercise in button mashing).
I’m an evil son of a bitch that loves to get away with… well pretty much anything I can get away with.
Rock on Meth! Keep up the bad work.
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.
Meth and Mr. Pink you all still rock in 07. It is the way of the world. I remember when vending went offline, heh. I have bought plat and i have made lots of plat through blood sweat and tears. I have played EQ1 for 4 days straight camping mobs with guildies that became real life friends. Virtual friends becoming real life friends, virtual items paid for with real life cash - what’s the difference. I’m not mad at you baby! If I find a dupe, I’m exploiting! It’s just the information age at its finest
Oh and “I Make Money” - I enjoyed reading your reply - but your site isn’t up Sinfulbastard.com, maybe its been so long since you replied and you got another site, maybe you moved to mexico and you have your farm of kids and you don’t need the site, but I was interested in seeing it.
I play EQ2 now. I enjoyed EQ1 better. I am no where as addicted to 2, and i tried to play 1 tonight and the graphics were disappointing and it was like a ghost town - sad really.
Here’s to a free market! Cheers!
Oh and btw - I have a sh*tload of mp3s on my HD!!! and movies and clips and wtf-ever
Love the whole tattoo on ur f*king forehead thing too Meth!!!!!!!!
U be mah hero
